How to Make a Website – Free Tips and Advise for Affiliates

When I started my online journey many years ago, finding information on how to make a website was no where close to the ease with which this information can be obtained today.

The internet has exploded like a cosmic phenomenon and information is scattered everywhere. Today, with the advent of so many social networking websites, it is much easier to learn to do pretty much anything yourself.

In the past, an a affiliate marketer would not need to concern him/herself about all the drama involved in how to make a website because back in the day, all y0u would need is to simply advertise using your affiliate link and begin to make money.

Well, Google has changed the rules of the game. Nowadays, you have to have your own domain name and web hosting service provider and must create good, quality original content for Google’s spiders (a.k.a bots or crawlers) to rank your website.

Domain Name and Webhost? What is that all about?

Nothing scary really. A domain name is simply a website name by which you can be found on the internet. Similar to to your physical address or post office box number where mails can reach you. For example, let’s say you found a niche affiliate market for smartphones. To get started, you would first need to register a domain name. Let’s call it www.myphonecompany.com.

You want to try to give a hint to your website visitors as to what your business is about. To register the domain name (a.k.a website address), you will find a reasonable web-hosting company (there are some pretty cheap ones out there) like Bluehost ( I personally use their services and am quite happy with them so far).

You will then run a search to see if the domain name is already taken. I have included a screenshot below showing what a typical name search results page looks like.

As you can see, the search query returns an ‘available’ or ‘not available’ response and in this case, suggestions on how to obtain similar names seeing that www.myphonecompany.com is ‘unavailable’. As a side note, ICANN is the  group responsible for coordinating domain names. Read more about them here

Migrating from Homestead to WordPress

When I just started out online, I used Homestead.com webhosting services to host and make my website and it was fine for a few years…until the big WordPress bang! Initially, I started out testing WordPress.com, which is not to be confused with WordPress.org.

Ok, I might have lost you for a minute somewhere in preceding paragraph so let me try to clear things up a bit. WordPress.com is self-hosted by Automattic (creators of WordPress.com and WordPress.org) and therefore limits you to some extent.

For example, you cannot add plugins in WordPress.com but you can do that and more in WordPress.org. With WordPress.org, you have to find your own hosting service provider.

So eventually, I started looking into WordPress.org, which allows for greater scalability. I mean, there is a gamut of plugins which are absolutely free and you can do a lot of customization if you are technically savvy. However, you have to find your own hosting company to host your WordPress.org website.

Although Homestead.com gave me the tools needed and provided easy to follow, step-by-step guide on how to make a website, they did not support WordPress.org hosting at the time and so I decided to migrate to a hosting company that did and that’s how I found Bluehost.

So, Wha’t Hosting All About?

I am glad you asked because that’s exactly where I was headed next :)

A webhost host’s your new website on their server, thus making it accessible to the entire world. Their job is not necessarily to show you how to make a website (although they might point you in that direction), but rather to make sure that when someone types your website address into their browser, they can find you.

If you are a hands-on DIY kind of person, then the following brief video tutorial that I did for you shows just how to make a website up and running on WordPress.org in minutes. This is on the assumption that you have already registered your domain name.
